Soil sometimes slides down a hill at a slow pace, perhaps several feet per minute. Slow moving soil masses are called soil slips. Soil slips can be small, a few square yards, or much larger, covering acres of land.
If your home is on a hillside, soil slips can actually pull soil out from under your home. If your foundation has been underpinned, the pilings can protect you from soil slips. With prior foundation repair, there may be no damage to your home, although your landscaping will be destroyed.
Soil slips are caused by water working its way into the soil on a hillside. If there a zones of weakness in the soil, soggy soil can break free and begin to slide down a hill. To avoid soil slips, take care to have proper drainage.
