Practical problems with soft soils, water tables, and access often make it too costly to drill deeper than 15 to 20 feet. Imagine trying to install a 15 foot deep pier in a room with a 10 foot ceiling or under an 8 foot eve. Pilings made of short sections of steel or concrete can be driven into the ground by pushing against the foundation of a home. The hydraulic equipment required to do so is the size of a small suitcase. Helical piers can be screwed into the ground, but require equipment, such as Bobcats, that may be too large to use in or around a home. A typical machine will measure 6 by 10 feet.
Once supports are installed, a home can be lifted off sinking soils. The lifting is done with hydraulic equipment, either by hand or with a manifolded hydraulic system connected to a pump and control system.
